4D Studio are seen as experts in the regeneration of town centres and the practice provides urban design, master planning, architecture and interior design services to clients in a wide range of sectors that include sport and leisure, retail, workplace, residential, and health care.
Our track record encompasses the sustainable design of not only film studio buildings but also residential, leisure, office, retail, health care and educational facilities. We have designed new buildings, schemes for the adaptive re-use of historic buildings and, increasingly, mixed-use projects that invigorate a community or simply kick- start the regeneration of run-down areas.
Elstree Studios generally
Since 2010 the practice has worked continuously with Elstree Studios to update both their film and TV facilities, including The Big Brother complex and additional new stages. This work has included masterplan proposals that have led directly to the demolition of the ‘Big Brother House’ and on the site made available as a result, the construction of new studios, workshops and offices (see following project)
Elstree Studios, two new Sound Stages, workshops and offices – see case study
4D Studio are currently retained as architects for the expansion of Elstree Film Studio. The project has all necessary consents and following a successful tender exercise R.G. Carter, Contractors, are on site with completion in early 2022. The project comprises two interlinked 1,700 sq. m. sound stages together with, 700 sq. m. of offices and 700 sq. m. workshops. The project meets the green agenda adopted by studio owners Hertsmere Council and utilises innovated factory fabricated construction methods.
Sky Studios Elstree (Rowleys Lane, Borehamwood)
4D Studio prepared the masterplan proposals and were subsequently retained as ‘specialist studio architect’ for the major new studio complex at Rowley’s Lane, Borehamwood. 4D Studio to work alongside Universal Studio advising the professional team retained by site owner Legal and General. The two-phase masterplan consists of 18 stages totalling 39,000sq. m., with 24,000sq. m. workshops, 3,000sq. m production support, and 1,000 sq. m. visitor facility.
The first phase of the project now on site and includes 12 sound stages. It expects to have the capability to generate 20% of its own energy through solar power. The studio is being built with the backing of Sky’s owner, Comcast, and in partnership with sister company NBCUniversal, and the total area of the site will cover the equivalent of 17 football pitches.
The Royal Pavilion, Llangollen Wales – see case study
4D Studio team designed and administered construction of this major music venue for the International Eisteddfod of Wales. It accommodates an audience of 6,000 people (the same size as the Albert Hall) and was constructed within a 40-week period between annual festivals. The project utilised state of the art tension membrane technology and was opened by Her Majesty the Queen following the successful completion of the project on time and on budget. The venue is regularly used for live music and television.

The 4D Studio team have been working in Lithuania to appraise development potential of an existing two stage film studio complex with aspirations for a new 3,000 sq. m sound stage and the upgrading of existing studios for TV.
The 4D Studio team are undertaking feasibility studies to extend and modernise a historic, listed and established film and TV complex in London. The project includes demolition of existing buildings, creating a new. sound stage with offices and workshops with associated restaurants.
West London Stages
The 4D Studio team are undertaking feasibility studies for a satellite studio complex on a west London industrial estate. The new complex will include sound stages with offices and workshops.
Saudi Arabia Stages
The 4D Studio team have recently undertaken a detailed design feasibility for a new Film and TV studio complex in Riyadh comprising of 6 sound stages and 5 TV studios including all necessary ancillary facilities shielded under a climate control canopy as protection from the intense heat of the desert.
The 4D Studio team are currently working on a new studio complex outside of Mumbai consisting of 12,500 sq. m of sound stages, a film school, workshops and all necessary ancillary facilities.
