Amersham Hospital Redevelopment
The former Amersham Hospital was the subject of a PFI project aimed at financing new hospital facilities through the release of the development value of adjoining land.
The original listed hospital buildings designed by Gilbert Scott were converted to 32 residential apartments. An additional 12 houses were designed and built to enhance the Grade II building and to maximise site potential.
Having completed this first phase of development, we then helped Taylor Woodrow win detailed planning permission for a further phase of flats and houses in line with the outline consent achieved.
As part of the scheme an ugly ten-storey accommodation block was demolished, and the adjacent hill dug out by three storeys to reduce the height and impact of the new building. The old hospital serves screen the new build development.
The second development stage comprised 60 flats and eight houses, mainly in two and three storeys around three sides of a courtyard. This disposition, and the use of an appropriate palette of materials, is in keeping with the historic townscape.
