We’re thrilled that Teva Hesse, Design Director at 4D Studio Architects has been invited to join as a speaker in this year’s Design in Mental Health 2025 Conference. From 2012 to 2022 Teva acted as design team leader and architect for the Estates Modernisation Programme for the South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust. Over a decade of close collaboration with the Trust, he led the design and masterplanning for the wholesale transformation of its 33-hectare (former asylum) estate, parts of which date back to the 1840’s.
The South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust commissioned new hospital buildings, Trinity and Shaftesbury, which opened in December 2022 and September 2023 respectively. The presentation will look at how the new wards have been adapted after hand-over by the Trust to address practical concerns about control and security. It will look at what specific features of the new hospital are valued (or not) by service-users, clinical staff and management. Lastly the talk will examine the way a major healthcare project is co-produced between designers and clinicians.
