The 4D Studio Architects proposal for a residential roof extension at Mayflower House, , already one of the tallest buildings in Cambridge received unanimous support from the Cambridge Planning Committee when they met on 4th September. The Planning case officer recommended approval and his report to committee included the following observations.

Telecoms equipment to be removed

“The application has successfully demonstrated that the proposal would provide a development of high architectural quality and an acceptable scale and massing.”
and,
“The proposed development is a high-quality design that would not result in significant visual harm upon the character and appearance of the local area and be compatible to its surroundings. The proposal is compliant with Cambridge Local Plan.”
and
“The proposed additional storey is attractively glazed with a distinctive ‘butterfly’ roof that will create a high-quality architectural statement to transform the block, the design of which was conceived in the 1960’s. The butterfly roofs of the development are an appealing and distinctive contribution to the Cambridge skyline and are utilised at the development further along the River Cam to the west at Riverside Place. The proposal will significantly improve the architectural quality of Mayflower House; views inside and outside the estate will be enhanced by replacing the discordant clutter of telecoms equipment and plant buildings on its roof with a harmonious and well considered architectural intervention.”

It is also pleasing to note that the “appealing and distinctive contribution to the Cambridge skyline” that is cited as a precedent are the roofs of one of our own award winning developments at Riverside Place. See image below
