The 4D Studio designed Shul in Hove has won the Sussex Heritage award. The award committee praised the synagogue as a “particularly calm space wonderfully light with a screen of terracotta glazed tubes edged in sapphire.”
The award was given to the Brighton & Hove Jewish Community (BNJC) / Renaissance project in the Public and Community category.
The synagogue was conceived and designed by architect Teva Hesse during his leadership of C.F. Møller’s London office. Following the closure of that office in December 2022, Teva Hesse joined 4D Studio Architects, which was appointed to continue the architectural design and provide the services necessary to deliver the synagogue to completion. Local architect Morgan Carn were responsible for the wider residential masterplan and adjoining residential buildings.
The judges highlighted the design’s exceptional use of light and calm ambience, drawing focus to its stunning structural screens.
